Nobel Pet Adoption

The Noble Pet Finder App is a mobile application designed to streamline the pet adoption process by matching potential adopters with shelter animals based on compatibility. Developed over a six-week period starting in early August 2022, the app evaluates multiple traits through a questionnaire to harmonize the adoption process, aiming to make it quicker and more efficient for users to find compatible pets.

Problem Statement

Problem Statement

The Noble app addresses two challenges: On one side, individuals seeking to adopt pets desire companions that fit well with their lifestyle, including compatibility with children, other pets, and their living environment. On the other hand, thousands of shelter animals await adoption. The app seeks to bridge this gap by facilitating a more informed and efficient matching process between humans and pets.

Users & Audience

The primary users of the Noble app are individuals looking to adopt pets, with a particular focus on ensuring a good match for their lifestyle. User research identified key personas, such as Martha, a homebody looking for a pet companion but frustrated by the poor user experiences on existing pet adoption sites. The app aims to serve people with various lifestyles, ensuring active individuals are matched with active pets and vice versa.

Scope & Constraints

This solo and passion-driven project entailed competitive research, user research, wireframing, user testing, prototyping, and visual design within a limited timeframe of six weeks. Challenges included creating an intuitive user interface that could convey a wealth of pet information and compatibility assessments without overwhelming the users.

04

Process & My Involvement

The process began with competitive analysis, followed by persona development and unmoderated usability testing to gather user feedback. Insights from these tests led to the creation of empathy maps and identifying user patterns and themes. Design steps included:

  • Developed paper and digital wireframes, considering user feedback to include or exclude components.

  • Created low-fidelity prototypes to refine the pet selection process and incorporate additional search filters.

  • Conducted two rounds of usability studies to refine prototypes and high-fidelity mockups, focusing on intuitive navigation, a less intrusive sign-up process, and the display of comprehensive pet information, including medical history and compatibility ratings.

Outcomes & Lessons Learned

The Noble app significantly improves the efficiency of pet adoption, benefiting both users and animal shelters by increasing visibility for shelter animals. Key lessons include the need for a more efficient solution for shelters to integrate their databases with the app to streamline the adoption process. Plans involve continuing user and usability testing to refine the user flow and conducting comprehensive user research to gain deeper insights into the user demographic.

This project underscores the potential for design to positively impact social issues, such as pet adoption, by enhancing the match between pets and potential adopters, thereby improving outcomes for both.
